Crown & Bridge
What is a crown?

A crown, also known as a cap, is used to replace the top portion of a tooth, generally they are made of ceramic (zirconia) or metal. A crown can either be adhered to an existing piece of tooth or an implant. The major benefits of a crown are to protect and preserve a pre-existing tooth, giving that tooth stability and longevity. They are also done for cosmetic reasons; to replace a large amalgam filling or to correct the appearance of a tooth. A broken tooth that cannot be treated using a filling is most often the reason for placing a crown.

Crowns are completed with two visits to our office, during your initial visit your tooth will be prepared for the crown. The dentist will grind and shape your tooth for the best fit of the cap, once this procedure has been completed the dentist will take impressions of the tooth and surrounding teeth and gums. The dental laboratory uses the impressions to make your permanent crown, that will blend with your current dentition. While waiting for the laboratory to create your individual crown, a temporary will be placed. On your second visit to the office, generally about two weeks later the dentist will remove your temporary crown and cement the permanent cap in place.
What is a bridge?

A bridge and the process to placing a permanent bridge is very similar to a crown, however a bridge is intended to replace a missing or previously extracted tooth. A bridge uses two crowns on either side of a false tooth, this seals the space where the tooth is missing and provides many benefits to dentition; restoring your ability to chew, preventing tooth shifting and cosmetic benefits.

Similarly to crowns, bridges are completed in two visits. During the first visit the teeth on either side of your missing tooth are shaped and ground to provide the supports for your bridge, next the impressions are taken and a temporary bridge is made. Once your bridge has been made by the laboratory you will come back for your second appointment, the temporary bridge will be removed and the permanent one will be cemented.
